Idea section
Last week, I expanded on some ideas for this project by developing an overall goal. However, that expansion was still quite vague, so I focused on deciding on an actual idea this week.
Possible approaches
Similarly to the mind mapping from last week, I have come up with physical and digital approaches to the project.
Physical
- Drawing – Taking inspiration from Sol Lewitt I could create a list of vague instructions that get a participant to draw random shapes that create an unexpected image
- I could create a jigsaw puzzle that makes an image that keeps changing when more pieces are added
Digital
- P5.js Game – This could be an interactive game in which the user is slowly given information that leads them to an incorrect conclusion
- P5.js Game – The user is given a series of words that relate to an image, using these words the user will have to make a guess what the image is
- Interactive graphic/animation that shows an image split into different pieces slowly coming together
Selected Idea
P5.js Game – This could be an interactive game when the user is slowly given information that leads them to an incorrect conclusion
Initial thoughts – Game-specific
The game could focus on a character that is to be put to death depending on the beliefs of the user. Based on the information they are given they will determine wether the character was guilty or not. Once they have made their decision they will find out the truth. And then be prompted to reveal what lead them to their choice (to me this part will be for feedback).
My Game Concept
What type of game should it be? (will there be graphics or will it be text and buttons)
- This will take inspiration from older text-based games such as Soft drizzle etc.
- There will be graphics (to make it more interesting to look at) and buttons (So that it is interactive)
What period is the game set in?
It won’t be set in any particular time but will take elements of the past and present e.g. being sentenced to death (past) – having a ‘fair’ trial (present)
How will the game lead the user to this conclusion?
- The user will be given a series of ‘facts’ that will defend or prosecute the main character.
- Some of these ‘facts’ will be lies.
What conclusion do I want the user to come to?
The user in most cases should come to the conclusion that the character is innocent
How will the correct conclusion be revealed?
- Upon making the final decision the user will be shown which facts are true etc. before it is finally said which decision was correct
Extention work ↴
- It could be a team game (make it multiplayer)- Where different opinions will change the outcome of the overall decision
Possible references (things to look into)
- Confirmation bias
- Text-based games
- Choice-based games
- Pattern recognition
- Wrongful convictions
- Judicial system
