Redefining the box – week 2

Creating randomness from simple information

All things are designed with an intended purpose but what if I redefined these purposes? Well, that is what I was asked to do in class, I was given a range of objects to redefine in as many ways as possible. As you might guess trying to think outside of the box is slightly difficult when you are so used to the box but I definitely had a go.

Objects :
Alternative uses for a hair tie
Singular Uses
  • A small slingshot
  • Phone grip
  • Slingshots
Multiple Uses
  • Skipping rope
  • Makeshift handcuff
Alternative uses for a fork
Singular uses
  • A comb
  • It could be used in clay moulding
  • As a bookmark
  • A door stop
  • A shovel
  • A hanger (If bent)
  • A back scratcher
Multiple uses
  • A pin to use on a corkboard
  • As earrings
  • Decorative wall art
  • To measure something
Alternative uses for tape
Uses
  • To make a sculpture
  • Cleaning (to pick up dirt)
  • Makeshift earplugs (probably won’t be comfortable)
  • Temporary eyelift
  • Camera filter
  • Temporary plaster
Special mention: Gathering more data and Pattern Recognition

Assessing the data that I have gathered and finding its commonality.

Pattern recognition

To address the thought process of pattern recognition as a class we took part in an exercise that consisted of drawing dots on a piece of paper, each dot had to be as far apart as possible. Eventually, as more dots were drawn the page was heavily populated with dots.

When looking at this image it does look like nothing more than a piece of paper with dots on it. But, the more you look at it the more your brain starts to recognise patterns within it.

Side note – the patterns that can be recognised are not unlike picking out constellations in the night sky.

Here are some patterns I could see when looking at this image. ↓

Extending the data that can be gathered for my journey

Initially, when I collected data from my journey I followed a list of different ways to do so. Now to extend the data I have collected I will first analyse the commonality in the data I have already collected and see how I can come up with something different.

So far in my data collection, I have gathered most of my data digitally, with a few physical drawings.

Physical Data

  • Sketches

Going forward I would like to see how I can gather more data in a physical sense, which could be making more sketches (quick or more detailed). Possibly using other mediums such as watercolour. Or I could gather data such as how many steps it takes me to get to uni and represent that in a drawing or text.
